The Gates in Central Park 2005

As the East Coast prepares for a very cool spell this weekend, I thought I’d dig up some bright and joyous winter pictures.  “The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979–2005” by Christo and Jeanne-Claude was erected in Central Park for two weeks in February 2005.  Given my love of contemporary art and temporary installations, it was a given that I would make an art pilgrimage* to see The Gates in real life.  And it was so worth it!  The dramatic orange structures really popped against the frosty ground, bare trees and grey city.  The heavy canvas flags whipped and snapped in the wind but from a distance appeared to floated and swung peacefully as they wound down the park trails.

The expanse of the installation was beautiful.  It was remarkable that so much of the park was taken up by these sculptures. Visitors and locals alike strolling the park that day seemed to be enjoying the artistic curiosity.  Apparently nothing cheers up a cold January day like exuberant orange flags.  Hopefully someday I’ll be able to see Cristo and Jeanne-Claude’s inspiration – Japanese Torii Gates.

*I was actually in NYC to visit a very good friend, but I timed it right so we’d get to see The Gates!

Isn’t there just the tiniest part of you that wishes you could have tipped them over like dominoes?

I remember wishing at the time that I could see the installation. I love that the Internet lets me live vicariously – even 7 or so years later. They are incredible.

    • I actually did try to hang off one. Those things were sturdy! 🙂

I always think about The Gates when it gets cold and dreary in January. The world needs more bright orange!

  3. The Gates was an exhibit that I still wish I had been able to see firsthand at the time. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, but I can still live vicariously through your eyes! Thanks!

    • Thanks! I was lucky to be in DC at the time so it was an easy trip. Assuming it is ever completed, I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it to Cristo’s Colorado River installation.

  5. I soooo wanted to see this! There was an exhibit of Christo’s drawings at the AGO a few years ago. I absolutely LOVE his drawings. If i could own one, I would. And I don’t covet much.

    • Glad you got to see the exhibit at least! The drawings are great.

I’m surprised you want one of these drawings so much. Everyone should have a little art collection; I’ll keep my eye on the art market and galleries for you!
